Joel Salatin for TIME

In early October while I was wrapping up a week of project work in Greenwood, Mississippi I received an assignment from TIME to photograph the quintessential organic farmer, Joel Salatin, in Swoope, Virginia, just a few hours from my home. Joel was everything he was cracked up to be, open and hospitable, opinionated and charismatic. The accompanying article, written by Bryan Walsh, captures Salatin’s personality and his views and is not to be missed. I deeply enjoyed my day with Joel and wish him all the best in his quest to lead Americans back to the farm.

The section opener above, and the spreads below are how it ran in the magazine. For those with iPads, purchase the October 22nd issue to see an extended slideshow and TIME’s first-ever moving section opener, drawn from video that I gathered while on the assignment.

I read the article and immediatly felt guilty about not planting my very small garden with winter vegetables. I live in San Diego, CA and truly have no excuse!!

Since your showing at the Blue Sky Gallery in Portland, I just keep checking to see what you are doing next. I did appreciate the quick interview that you allowed me to do in front of my instructor. My photography skills are growing, but nothing like you do. You have that way of capturing how things really are. Thanks for being one that I want to emulate.
